Young people working on the Caldon Canal

Work on improving the Caldon Canal has been a step towards employment and self esteem for local young people.

We have been able to engage young people, aged between 16 and 24 and not in education or training, on improvement work on the Caldon Canal. They learn practical skills on the job, gain a qualification - and improve the canal for everyone else at the same time. Many of the young people have gone on to further work or training.

More than 40 young people worked in teams, each spending at least six months with us. They did dry stone walling, hedge laying, planted new hedges and soft embankment work. They also built a new towpath between Consall and Frogall.

We uncovered a lock that had been grown over by vegetation for 100 years, a lot of local people didn’t know it was there
