Hedges and walls

We are restoring traditional hedges and walls in the Churnet Valley.

There are least five types of drystone wall in the Churnet Valley. This unusual diversity reflects the valley's history. Industry brought people here from around the UK and they brought different techniques of wall building with them.

This means that we cannot take a 'one style fits all' approach to repairing and rebuilding. Our wallers have to be skilled to build in different styles.

Like in the rest of the country, many hedges have disappeared from our landscape. We have replanted some old hedges and laid many more.

Rebuilt wall

We worked with our countryside skills to protect and maintain some of the really important industrial heritage of our valley.
